The Griffis Art Center's INTERNATIONAL ARTIST-in-RESIDENCE PROGRAM was founded in August, 1989. Supportive, nurturing, inspirational... the GAC offers a unique opportunity for an artist chosen from around the world; the opportunity to reside and work as a resident artist, in an atmosphere designed to stimulate personal vision and encourage new and exciting artistic expressions.

The Griffis Art Center is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation supported entirely by private donations.

The Program has two specific goals:

      1) to cultivate and encourage contemporary fine art and artists, and
      2) to create an opportunity for international exchange among artists and the community through the visual arts.

 ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Twice a year a visual artist (from a country other than the United States) is selected to be a guest of the Griffis Art Center for a five (5) month Residency in New London, Connecticut USA. The artists are selected on the basis of their application, their demonstrated commitment to art by the education they have chosen, their discipline, their total resume and their references. Selections are made by members of the Board of Trustees of the Griffis Art Center.

The Artist-in-Residence Program is for artists involved in the creation of visual arts. It is neither a school nor an artist's colony. It does, however, offer an opportunity for professional artists to explore their full creative potential. An artist's work may be contemporary or traditional, and may include most types of medium. However, certain casting techniques, which take too long to produce finished products, may have to be eliminated. Printmaking, photography and casting equipment are not available on the premises.

During their months of residency, each artist is provided with a spacious, private, fully furnished apartment including all utilities, studio space and an Open Studio Exhibition.

We have had the pleasure of hosting artists from Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Eritrea, India, Italy, Poland, Russia, Spain, Switzerland, and Vietnam.

ABOUT THE FACILITIES

Facilities for the Artist-in-Residence Program consist of several buildings in a quiet residential neighborhood. The apartment for the International Artist is located in Sapphire House, a turn of the century converted mansion with ten (10) other apartments rented by artists, writers and composers. The apartment is fully furnished including, dishes, pots and pans, linens, towels and basic appliances. The apartments are spacious and comfortable.

The artist's studio, named "GEMFIRE STUDIO", is for the exclusive use of the resident artists. Gemfire Studio is divided into three areas: (1) one for our International Artist-in-Residence, (2) one for our Bulgarian Artists, and (3) an area to sit and relax with guests. There is no smoking in the studio for safety reasons. Guests and activity in the studio area is limited to maintain a degree of privacy for the artists. Each artist may use the studio to work or they may work in their apartments.

In this quiet, private environment, the artists can focus and work intensively - uninterrupted by the static of daily life back home.

Within walking distance of the Art Center is the New London Public Library, the Connecticut College campus, grocery stores, restaurants, the local train and bus stations, the waterfront pier, and other convenience shopping. For easy transportation within the city, a bus stop is just a block or two away. New London is a city that offers both the convenience of a large city with the charm of a small town.

ABOUT NEW LONDON

The Griffis Art Center is located on a quiet side street in New London, Connecticut. Connecticut is one of the New England states in the northeastern section of the United States, and New London is located midway between New York City and Boston, Massachusetts. With a population of 28,000 residents, the city includes Connecticut College, the Lyman Allyn Art Museum, the United States Coast Guard Academy, the Garde Art Theater, Mitchell College, train and bus service, and an airport only 15 minutes away. Located where the Thames River meets Long Island Sound, New London, once a whaling city, now boasts many social, cultural and artistic activities.

ABOUT CONNECTICUT

Connecticut is traditional New England - white frame houses, trim church steeples, and ancient town greens. Connecticut is also industry and high tech, glitter and achievement, the cradle of manufacturing, and the birthplace of the submarine. We have a long history of attracting and nurturing artists, writers, and thinkers who march to their own cadences, and we want to encourage you to come and enjoy our state.

Connecticut has more than 250 miles of shoreline along the Long Island Sound, with New London featuring one of the state's finest beaches, Ocean Beach Park. In addition, two-thirds of Connecticut is green, with more than one hundred state parks and forests, dozens of nature centers, arboretums, and nature preserves.

Autumn is one of the most stunning seasons in Connecticut. Generally about the second week of October, green hills flare into a hundred shades of scarlet and gold, coaxing you out for a last fair weather fling. The land is transformed by vibrant color. The tastes and smells of harvest overflow roadside stands throughout the state with fresh cider, giant pumpkins, and a whole gamut of mouth-watering fruits and vegetables.

New Englanders cling to tradition in winter. Snow on the hills, frost on the windows and silence in the woods. Although winter is mild in New London, we still enjoy time-honored winter customs: roaring wood fires to drive off the chill, innkeepers with cheerful news of chowders and roast meats, and a general settling in for the winter season.

Spring arrives none too soon and bursts into full bloom by May. Connecticut turns green again along with brilliantly colored daffodils, tulips and flowering shrubs and trees.

Country fairs, historic sights, art galleries, nature centers, theater, music and of course all outdoors - that's what Connecticut has to offer in the fall, winter and spring during the Artist-in-Residence Program in New London, Connecticut, USA.

The Griffis Art Center, as a private, non-profit organization, does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, sex, national origin, handicap, age or economic status in any of its programs.
