Judi HOSTETTER
1994-1995

Gift by the Artist for the Griffis Art Center Collection
"Mountain Laurel", Watercolor on Paper, 30.5" x 34", 1995

Judi is comfortable working in a variety of media although she has concentrated almost exclusively in watercolor the past few years. Whimsical to dramatic, her subject matter is wide ranging…from portraits and human interest to landscapes and animals.

Her work is in the permanent collection of several corporations including: the Hickory Valley Retirement Center; Provident General Insurance Co.; the McDonald's Corporation; Merrill Lynch; Physicians Weight Loss Centers; Office Coordinators, Inc; and the American National Bank, as well as many private collections throughout the United States and Central and South America.

"I once heard, 'I have always been amazed at what an artist can create even with the barest minimum of tools, i.e.: a piece of paper, a scrap of canvas, a bit of graphite, ink or paint and a vision.' I echo these statements. I am always in awe of the leap from the white page to the final results.

An artist dips his brush into his soul and paints patches of being, his values, his goals, loves and fears. If you like what he paints, he is grateful. If you don't…that is okay too.

I've held a pencil, brush, pen or charcoal in my hand nearly all of my life. I just have this inner drive to create, to express myself creatively, artistically. Although I had painted often through my child rearing years, I waited until the children were grown to devote all of my energies to building a career in the art field.

Because of the circumstances of my life, it was not possible to acquire a formal art education as many do. However, through various workshops, private classes and a great deal of independent study, combined with many years of hard work, I have achieved some success.
