ABOUT the ARTIST For years I have been exploring new ways to integrate the art of both Oriental and Western figure painting. I have created a unique style by applying the skills of traditional Chinese paintings of flowers, birds, and calligraphy, while absorbing the Western painting characteristics of color and structure. As a young man Yang studied calligraphy and stone seal carving from Li Jian, a famous calligrapher in Shanghai. At the age of 18, he was accepted into the Ling Nan School of Chinese Painting under Gao Jian Fu, as Gao's last personal student, when Yang was studying in the Guangzhou School of Fine Arts. From 1950-1953, before graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, he studied under Xu Bei Hong. At present, he is a professor and Vice President of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. He is a Council Member of the Chinese Artist Association, the Association of Guangzhou Arts and Literature, the Standing Commitee of the Chinese Artist Association- Guangdong Branch, and the Administrative Council of Research Institute of Chinese Painting in Beijing. His works have been exhibited in Japan, Italy, France, Canada, Australia, Africa, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Nepal, Hong Kong, Macau, and the United States. A number of his works have been collected by the National Museum and Art Galleries, and six collections of his paintings and two books have been published. |
